Sophia, a heroine of the kind we aren't used to seeing in a video game
Since its release at the end of August, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has received a very positive reception. On Metacritic, the press has praised its powerful atmosphere, striking soundtrack, and a story that holds up well despite a shift in direction compared to the first two games. Between fast-paced combat and puzzles based on ancient artifacts, some reviewers are even calling it a successful cross between Uncharted and God of War.
But what comes up most often in the feedback isn't just the gameplay: it's Sophia.

A smuggler, not a damsel in distress
Sophia isn't a new character who came out of nowhere: she was already a beloved figure in Requiem, the seasoned smuggler who protects Amicia and Hugo. Resonance tells her story fifteen years earlier: how does a child raised in a convent, prone to visions, become one of the best fighters in the community of traffickers that took her in?
Reviewers emphasize that she is written as a survivor, a skilled fighter who has clearly been through hardships and come out the other side stronger. This is also what sets her apart from Amicia: in the first two games, stealth and fleeing dominated because Amicia had limited offensive capabilities. Sophia, however, is built for direct confrontation, without that turning her into a mere "sexy warrior."
The detail everyone's talking about: her design
Asobo Studio publicly documented the choices made regarding Sophia's aesthetic. They traded her loose clothing and bright colors for worn leather vests and dull fabrics, which is more consistent with a life of survival and limited resources. The result prioritizes realism and functionality with a coat split to avoid hindering movements during combat, climbing, crouching, etc. Rather than a silhouette designed to be sexy.
Today, a heroine designed first as a fighter, with a costume that is functional and consistent with her story rather than intended for the player's gaze, remains the exception more than the norm. That accounts for a good part of why Sophia is so well-received; players can identify with a real person and not a fantasy.
